Why I Keep Writing When No One is Reading!

By Keith C. Milne

I, like a lot of other writers, have a love/hate relationship with writing, and I struggle with the process immensely, but also enjoy that struggle.

I have a lot to say, and want to be heard like others, and to also have a venue in which to express my opinions about different topics without being attacked or ganged up on almost instantly on social media.

This is my space. My domain. I pay for the privilege of being able to exercise my constitutional right to free speech. And, it’s worth every cent to be able to do so without a bunch of blow back from crazies who only want to undermine the good that others are working to accomplish.

I continue writing because it helps me sort out my own thoughts, as well as question my own beliefs and values. It is surprising at times what comes up to the surface from inside while writing. It can be both terrifying and exhilarating simultaneously.

I find writing about what I think about various contemporary issues to be very cathartic as well. It helps me mentally and emotionally to be able to express my thoughts and feelings and not have to keep them all inside until I feel like an explosion is imminent.

I write a lot about political issues, at least so far that topic has occupied the lions share of my writing here at my personal blog site. That’s because I’ve been so utterly shocked and horrified at what has happened in our country politically over the last several decades, that I feel compelled to expound accordingly because I completely and utterly care about this country, the world, and the environment (and therein lies the foundation for many of my current problems!).

I choose to continue writing despite an audience because I’m writing for myself, with the faint hope that, somehow, maybe one little comment or idea will create a positive spark inside someone else. Something I say will resonate with another human being who feels similar to me and now takes some comfort or a new perspective with them about the topic at hand, and that this new idea or comment will then become a spark that will turn inaction into action, or turn something that was, perhaps, destined to become a violent action into a non-violent inaction. In other words, I write in the hope that I am not only helping myself in many ways by doing so, but also helping others with their struggles.

At the very least, I write with the hope that, if even one person reads one tiny little thing somewhere in all the words that are beginning to pile up at this site that makes them feel better, or somehow is cathartic for them as well, or creates any positive ripple whatsoever, that I have accomplished my mission!

If you are reading this and have made it all the way to the end, then as as Jose Diaz-Balart on NBC Nightly news likes to end his broadcast by saying:

“Thank you for the privilege of your time.”
